Other Oregon Berry Varieties Oregon grows a wide variety of berries with different harvest times, uses and characteristics. Here are more of the wonderful berry varieties we grow for you.

Chester

  • A semi-erect blackberry developed by the USDA-ARS in Illinois and Maryland from a cross between a breeding selection and ‘Thornfree’
  • Medium (~5g) sized fruit; deep black color; round shape; medium number of drupelets per fruit; large size seeds;
  • Good flavor but very different and less aromatic than trailing blackberry (i.e. ‘Marion’)
  • Thornless; very high yielding
  • Late ripening season; typically begins in mid-August and can go until frost.

Kotata

  • From a cross of two USDA selections; grandparents include Boysenberry, two wild Northwest blackberries and an eastern blackberry.
  • Medium to large (6-7g) fruit; deep black color; medium seed.
  • Fresh season is typically July 1 – July 24.

Loganberry

  • A cross between blackberry and red raspberry.
  • Commonly used in pies and wines. Has unique, tart flavor.
  • Medium size (5.0g), deep red, medium seed.
  • Fresh season is typically June 20 – July 10.

Other Oregon Berry Varieties

Silvan

  • A trailing blackberry from a cross of ORUS 742 x Marion; cross was made by G.F. Waldo with USDA-ARS in Corvallis who sent the seed to Australia (Victoria) where the original selection and development took place.
  • Generally similar to ‘Marion’ in growth habit, yield and fruit quality.
  • High yields produced on very vigorous, thorny plant
  • Medium-large (6.2 g) fruit, larger than ‘Marion’; purple-black color; excellent flavor; excellent processing characteristics. Fresh fruit are not as firm as ‘Marion’
  • Early ripening (2-6 days before ‘Marion’) typically beginning in late June and extending until about the end of July.
  • Growers report greater winter hardiness than ‘Marion’

Waldo

  • From a cross of two USDA selections, one grandparent is Marion.
  • Medium to large (6-7g) fruit; deep black color; very uniform conic shape; high number of drupelets per fruit; medium size seeds.
  • Thornless; easier on workers and eliminates thorn contaminants concerns.
  • Late ripening; fresh season is typically July 15 to August 10.

Black Diamond

  • Thornless, high yielding
  • Trailing type
  • Medium – large berry – 5.8g
  • Dark purple to black color
  • Medium acidity in flavor
  • Firm fresh berry
  • Small seeds
  • Mainly grown for processed market
  • Fresh season: June 28– July 21
  • Brix – 11.7, pH 3.34 , TA 13.5

Black Pearl

  • Thornless, yield similar to Marionberry
  • Trailing type
  • Medium – large berry 6.2g
  • Dark purple to black color
  • Medium acidity with aromatic flavor
  • Firm fresh berry
  • Small seeds
  • Grown for both fresh and processed market
  • Fresh Season: July 3 – July 24
  • Brix 13.42, pH 3.27, TA 15.96

Nightfall

  • Thornless, yield similar to Marionberry
  • Trailing type
  • Medium –large berry 6.2g
  • Dark purple to black color
  • Very acid, tart flavor
  • Firm fresh berry
  • Small seeds
  • Mainly grown for processing
  • Fresh season: July 3- July 24
  • Brix – 12.75, pH 3.08, TA 30.15

Obsidian

  • Thorns, yield higher than Marionberry
  • Trailing type
  • Large size berry – 6.8g
  • Very dark to glossy black color
  • Medium acidity
  • Firm fresh berry
  • Small to medium sees
  • Grown for fresh and processed market
  • Fresh season – June 25 – July 15
  • Brix – 12.44, pH – 3.23, TA – 18.33

Onyx

  • Medium – Large berry 6.1 g
  • Dark purple to black color
  • Medium acidity
  • Very firm fresh berry
  • Small seeds
  • Grown mainly for fresh market
  • Fresh season – July 7-August 1
  • Brix – 12.69, pH – 3.53, TA- 11.08

Ouachita

  • Thornless, high yielding
  • Erect culitvar
  • Medium sized berry 5.0g
  • Dark purple to black color
  • Medium acidity, aromatic
  • Firm fresh berry
  • Large seeds
  • Grown mainly for fresh market
  • Fresh season – July 27-September 1
  • Brix – 10.74, pH – 3.37, TA – 10,52

Triple Crown

  • Thornless, high yielding
  • Semi erect cultivar
